Why Rosary Army Uses New Media

By Greg Willits • Apr 6th, 2008 • Category: Welcome to Rosary Army

This past weekend Rosary Army and our sister apostolate, SQPN, were invited to participate in the Faith and Media Conference at the Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio.

We made so many great new friends and people who are just busting at the seams with excitement over the possibilities of Catholic New Media. We also got to meet tons of listeners and viewers of the various SQPN and Rosary Army programs, including upwards of 50 people who arrived from California, Colorado, New York, and many other states just to hang out and have a cup of coffee with other members of the SQPN and Rosary Army communities.

This only made us more excited for the very first SQPN Catholic New Media Celebration that we are planning for June 22nd of this year to be held in Atlanta, Georgia the day after the annual Eucharistic Congress. We anticipate hundreds of people being there and we sincerely hope you’ll be one of them. We already have some amazing, amazing things in store for all of you.

So why does Rosary Army, and in turn, SQPN use so much New Media to Evangelize?

Well, this weekend Jennifer and I were blessed with the honor of presenting the closing talk at Steubenville’s Faith and Media Conference. We also participated in a podcasting forum with Fr. Roderick Vonhogen and Fr. Seraphim Beshoner. Also in attendance were several other SQPN podcasters including Fr. Bill Kessler, George Leite, and Dr. Paul Camarata. It was a great warm up to what we hope will be a fun and exciting SQPN Catholic New Media Celebration this summer. We’ll have more details on that in the weeks to come.

For now, though, we invite you to watch the recorded streams from the sessions we were involved with to give you a little insight into the hows and whys of Catholic New Media in connection with Rosary Army and SQPN.

  1. Hey guys! Just wanted to say I think that what you and Fr. Roderick and many others in the Catholic Church are doing is revolutionary! Using new, hip tech to communicate to younger generations is so effective. As a former protestant and now as a Catholic I think it is amazing how large the Catholic faith is and how little (almost none, I thought Catholics were Jewish) most people, including Catholics, know about it! Evangelism is a hard thing for most people in the Catholic church to stomach, often because of all of the pain our violent “evangelism” has caused in the past. However, I think the way you present information through a “window into a Catholic’s life” setting is very welcoming and interesting to non-Catholics. Also, as an English teacher I find it wonderful that we as a people have found a way to preserve and spread personal narratives even if not in writing. It is the new generation’s mode of communication that can reach anywhere in the world and it just fills me with joy to see that Catholics like you guys are taking a stand and using it for your faith! Yay!

  2. Sadly with my ancient computer i can rarely get podcasts.. but i felt i must comment..
when i sit in a doctors waiting room, with my bag, knotting Rosaries, people ask me what i am making.

i tell them, ” i am making a Rosary! i make them for the military, because they don’t shine, or make noise.. and for the hospitals, because they can go through MRI s and CAT scans…. would you like to learn how?”
about half the time the answer is yes, and they get a bundle of twine, a referral to rosary army, and a quick lesson. i usually also give them a finished Rosary so they have one to study (and pray).

sometimes they would just like a Rosary, but don’t want to learn how to make one. thats fine by me.

there, Evangelism.. spreading the Gospel in a friendly pain free way. because MOST of the time, they ask ME…

  3. Hello Greg -

We met briefly at the New Media Celebration.

Since I work at an Atlanta Catholic high school, I was wondering if you or Jennifer
    attended any Catholic schools.

    Thanks,

    Tim

  4. I WOULD LOVE TO HELP MAKE ROSARIES WHO CAN I CONTACT.

  5. Thank you for the download of the rosary prayers and mysteries. Also, i would like to help make rosaries and give them out in my area so please send me instructions on how to make them.

I have one question about “THE CREED” at the part where “He descended to the dead.” why did the person in the recorded prayer say ” He descended into hell.”? Is that the same thing?

    Thanks,

    John
